The power of partnerships in Westminster

Join us on Tuesday 22 October at Westminster City Hall for an evening reception celebrating WPA's partnerships that are supporting young people into employment, in an event hosted by the Lord Mayor of Westminster, Councillor Robert Rigby.

 

We will update members and stakeholders one year on from our collaboration with Young Westminster Foundation (YWF) and 2-3 Degrees on the pioneering Mastering My Future programme.

 

WPA Vice Chair James Raynor (Chief Executive, Grosvenor Property UK), will set out how the initiative is helping to transform young lives in Westminster, alongside the CEO of YWF, Helen Mann, and 2-3 Degrees co-founder Carl Konadu.

Planning update and news

Planning for Growth

Under our joint London Property Alliance banner we have put forward a four point Plan for Growth which we presented at the Labour Party conference. The ideas in the document, which reflect the Association’s business priorities, underpins our various policy responses as we work with the new Government, the Mayor and central London boroughs – including Westminster City Council - on supporting central London’s economic growth and social prosperity. Times Square inspiration for Oxford Street

Following the recent Mayoral and Government announcement on the proposed pedestrianisation of Oxford Street, Mayor Sadiq Khan has spoken of the inspiration that Times Square can provide for the transformation of the famous street. Times Square has been reworked by creating a series of pedestrian blocks and removing car access. Loxton Walk development announced

The Portman Estate and Derwent London have announced plans for the launch of Loxton Walk in Marylebone. The development will open in 2025 and will deliver 28,500 sq ft of new retail and leisure space across 17 ground floor units. You can read more here.

Response to Government planning reform consultation
In the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government's (MHCLG) consultation on the proposed reforms to the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF), the London Property Alliance has called for planning reform to extend to offices to reverse a fall in major office planning applications in central London. Demolition and retrofit in national planning policy

The MHCLG has commissioned new research to better understand the issues and the role of national planning policy guidance in this often highly politicised and binary debate. We are urging all of our members to have their say and complete this simple and fast survey. Complete the survey here.

WPA Annual Lunch 2024 - final

The guest speaker for this year’s WPA Annual Lunch on Thursday 14 November will be renowned journalist, presenter and foreign correspondent Clive Myrie. 

 

Clive is a multi-award winning and BAFTA nominated journalist, and this year led the BBC’s UK General Election coverage. He will be providing highlights from his time as a leading foreign correspondent, as well as his insight on the recent results from the US Election. 

 

There are limited tickets remaining, and members are advised to book quickly. The WPA Annual Lunch is the UK’s largest gathering of its kind and brings together more than 1,200 of London's leading real estate professionals, policy makers and stakeholders.

St Mary’s Hospital redevelopment in doubt

A review into the New Hospital Programme by the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Wes Streeting MP, has cast doubt on the redevelopment of St Mary's Hospital and the longer-term plans for the development of a life science hub on the site. You can read more here.

Consultation on the Victoria Neighbourhood Plan underway

The Victoria Neighbourhood Forum is seeking views on its draft Neighbourhood Plan, which will be used to inform and determine planning applications for change and development in the area. The consultation closes on 20 October. Find out more and have your say here.

Plan for a Fairer Economy update

An update on the Fairer Economy Plan has been published by Westminster City Council. It's objectives are to foster an environment where small businesses can thrive, to provide better overall quality experience to residents, businesses, workers and visitors and to bolster employment opportunities in the area. Inclusive Design Breakfast and Panel Discussion

The Crown Estate and Grosvenor have collaborated on a report on inclusive design for the built environment. The report calls for property owners and developers to make places and spaces welcoming to more people. A panel discussion will supplement the launch of the report.

Sustainable City Charter update

Seventy-five leading Westminster businesses have now pledged to reduce carbon emissions from their buildings. New signatories include the Savoy Theatre on the Strand, as well as Europa Foods XB and LDG Partnership. All signatories have access to an online toolkit and resource hub which features knowledge sharing material, including webinars.
