The first series of Examination in Public (EIP) hearings on the City Corporation’s draft City Plan opened with a speech from Shravan Joshi MBE, Chairman of the Planning & Transportation Committee, in which he spoke of the vision behind the Plan to ensure development is socially, environmentally and economically sustainable. Shravan highlighted the City of London’s unique role as a centre of international trade and finance, contributing £97bn every year in economic output.
Spread over three days, these initial hearings covered the emerging policies on spatial strategy, offices, culture, retail and design. CPA Chair Ross Sayers (Landsec) and CPA Board Planning Advisor, Jeremy Randall (Newmark) participated in the hearings on behalf of CPA, highlighting the industry’s projected demand for best-in-class office space in the City of London. The next hearings will take place between 29 April and 1 May. Read more on the first week in a blog by Jeremy Randall hereand keep up to date with the latest news on the draft City Planhere.
City of London election results in
Senior figures at the City Corporation, including Chris Hayward, Shravan Joshi MBE and Keith Bottomley, have been successfully re-elected. However, Graham Packham, Vice-Chairman of the Planning and Transportation Committee, was amongst those who lost their seat. The coming term also marks the end of Shravan's tenure as Chairman of the committee, with the process for selecting a new Chairman and Vice-Chairman being formally conducted at its next meeting on 6 May. While the number of sitting independents in the Square Mile has grown, the election saw Labour increase its presence to seven seats. Read more here.
City Corporation responds to Spring Statement
In the response, Policy Chairman Chris Hayward has called for bolder action to drive investment into infrastructure, property and unlisted equities, noting the “untapped potential” of these sectors. Work to transform St Paul's Gyratory to begin
The project, which starts on April 28, will see almost 1,500 sqm of road space converted into pavement, as well as new cycle lanes and 3,000 sqm of public space with seating and play equipment delivered over two years. CPA has long supported improvements to this busy thoroughfare to open up an important gateway to the City of London. Read our supporting letterhereand more on the project here.
City voice
In an interview with Green Street Newsmarking his three yearsas Planning & Transportation Chairman, Shravan Joshi MBE highlighted the low vacancy rates for best-in-class offices and how "getting the sustainable agenda firmly rooted into planning" is among his key successes. He also raised CPA concerns around onerous GLA cycle parking provision requirements in new offices.
“The biggest challenge for me right now is the fact that around 2027, we actually don’t have enough prime office space coming to market. We’ve got this sort of bottleneck because the capital markets aren’t that strong at the moment. There are viability issues.”
