City Plan to drive growth in the Square Mile approved
The City of London Corporation’s bold and ambitious draft‘City Plan 2040’passed the first hurdle of approval after members of the Planning and Transportation Committee yesterday (31 Jan) unanimously voted in favour of it. Committee Chairman Shravan Joshi MBE, said: “The City Plan 2040 will help to shape the built environment in ways that rise to the challenges of our time while making the most of the many strengths of the Square Mile.”
The draft Plan will provide a planning and policy framework that will guide the growth of the Square Mile over the next 16 years and underpin the City Corporation’s strategic priorities.Key policy drivers include provision for an additional 1.2m sqm of office floorspace by 2040, and transforming the Square Mile into a 7-day-a-week cultural and leisure destination.
Further details on the committee hearing and submissions put forward by CPA and other parties can be found here. For a summary of the key policies in the draft Plan and their likely impact on future development read our Gerald Eve blog for CPA members here.
Sustainability SPD forms key plank of City Plan
As reported in our last CPA newsletter, the City Corporation’s pioneering draft Sustainability Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) Planning for Sustainability, was approved by members at the Planning & Transportation Committee on 12 December. The principles set out in the document will form a key plank of the new City Plan and shape evolving policies on development and the environment, including the circular economy, biodiversity and climate resilience.
Public consultation on the SPD has not yet opened. In the meantime, CPA members can find a summary of how these policies will impact future development in a DP9 blog here.
